Encircling Delhi, optimising Ghaziabad’s connectivity- All you need to know about Orbital Rail
The orbital rail project is part of the NCR Planning Board’s 2041 regional plan. The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has been designated as the lead agency, collaborating with the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC) to compile a feasibility report. An initial budget of approximately Rs 10 lakh has been allocated for this study, which is expected to be completed within six months.
Planned to encircle Delhi, the rail system will integrate with the existing Eastern and Western Peripheral Expressways. Unlike these expressways, which are limited in access, the orbital rail will feature stations approximately every five kilometers, aiming to serve a broader population across Uttar Pradesh and Haryana. The project is designed to enhance supply chain efficiency by connecting areas currently not reached by the expressways.
Connectivity with Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut RRTS corridor
A key feature of the orbital rail project is its connection near Duhai with the rapid rail corridor. This link will facilitate smoother transportation for both passengers and freight between Ghaziabad, Baghpat, Noida, and Greater Noida. Additionally, the project is expected to create a new freight corridor, linking to the existing Dadri freight corridor and strengthening the region’s logistics sector.
In May, a high-level meeting chaired by Meerut Divisional Commissioner Selva Kumari emphasised the urgency of accelerating the project. The meeting included representatives from the NCR Planning Cell, Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA), Uttar Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (UPSRTC), and GDA. Participants underscored the project’s role in transforming the NCR into a premier logistics hub by 2032.
Vision for the future, what makes the project significant?
Looking ahead, it is anticipated that by 2032, urban clusters such as Gurgaon-Manesar, Faridabad-Ballabgarh, Meerut, Ghaziabad, and Noida-Greater Noida-Kasna will evolve into megacities. Successful implementation of the orbital rail project is seen as crucial to realising this vision, significantly enhancing the region’s transport infrastructure and fostering urban growth.
As the feasibility study progresses, residents and businesses in the NCR can look forward to improved transportation networks and a more robust logistics framework, driving the region’s future growth and development.
