Chennai: Internet Service Providers and cable TV companies have paid their dues amounting to Rs 1.1 crore to the Chennai Corporation to retain their cables. This comes a day after the civic body removed over 50km of excess cables of companies that had dues. North Chennai had cable stretching for 6km while south and central had 22 km each. The longest was 6.3km cable in Valsaravakkam.

In an effort to improve the aesthetics of Chennai city, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has started removing illegal television and internet cables stuck on street lamp posts and tree branches in the city recently.

In a recent review meeting, Chennai Corporation Commissioner J Kumaraguruparan issued orders to this effect. He directed officials to collect dues from cable and internet operators. As a result, nearly 50km of cables were removed over the weekend.

This effort has brought significant changes in areas like George Town, Soolaimedu, Teynampet, and Annanagar. A considerable amount of cables are being removed and Chennai is being cleaned up. The illegal cables have been removed for a distance of 6.1 km in the Valasaravakkam zone alone.

Drive against shops encroshing roads

Besides this drive against illegal cable, the Chennai Corporation has also issued an instruction notice with the help of the police to those who have encroached on the roads of the Corporation to voluntarily remove the encroachments within three days. Through this drive, the GCC aims to remove shops that encroaches along the road.
