Cambridge Road suffers from foul drains & missing footpaths; complaints to BBMP and Army Base authorities about improper sewage disposal remain unaddressed

Bengaluru is facing a dengue outbreak that has claimed a few lives, with thousands of cases reported at city hospitals. Despite the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Chief Commissioner’s announcement of cleanliness measures to combat the spread, the BBMP Health Department’s efforts have not been effective. The BBMP Health Department and Solid Waste Management Department struggle with inconsistency. Authorities fail to monitor cleanliness in known mosquito breeding areas. For instance, grey water is being discharged into the drain on the 1st Cross of Cambridge Road, opposite 515 Army Base Workshop School. The foul odour from the grey water released by 515 Army Base Workshop’s residential quarters is so strong that one needs a handkerchief to shield their nose.

“I have been complaining to the BBMP ward engineer and the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board engineer to fix this problem as grey water is a health hazard not only for students of 515 Army Base Workshop School but also pedestrians. I urge the 515 Army Base Workshop authorities to take measures to stop letting grey water into the roadside drain,’’ said BR Chandran, a social activist from Halasuru.

The other problem on this road is the lack of footpaths on one side of the road and the missing stone slabs on the footpath-cum-drain on the other side of the road. A stretch on one side of the road where the footpath is missing is occupied by auto rickshaws and cabs thus compelling pedestrians to walk in the middle of the road making them vulnerable to road accidents.

When contacted, BBMP Assistant Executive Engineer Murthy stated that he had repeatedly complained to the 515 Army Base Workshop authorities, but without any result. “I have advised them to take measures to stop letting grey water into the roadside drain but they failed to fix this problem. I will advise them again to stop letting the grey water into the drain but if they fail to do so, I will have to close the drain that carries grey water into the roadside drain,’’ said the BBMP official.

Meanwhile, BWSSB Assistant Executive Engineer Kanakaraj has said that he would visit the spot on Friday. “The 515 Army Base Workshop authorities have to make arrangements to treat the grey water that is being let into the roadside drain. They should not allow the residents of the quarters to let grey water into the roadside drain,’’ said Kanakaraj.

AK Dubey, an officer of the 515 Army Base Workshop, stated, “Earlier grey water used to flow into the underground drainage pipe.
