Delhi-NCR saw heavy rainfall on Wednesday (July 31) evening, bringing much needed relief from the sweltering heat and humidity. The downpour reduced the maximum temperature to 37.8°C, down from Tuesday’s high of 39.3°C. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for moderate to heavy rain, along with thunderstorms and lightning, affecting various areas of Delhi and NCR. The IMD forecasts this weather pattern to persist until August 5.

“In continuation with previous weather alert: 31/07/2024: 18:00 IST; Heavy rainfall accompanied with moderate to heavy thunderstorm and lightning (30-50 Km/h gusty winds) is very likely to occur at entire Delhi and NCR, during next 2 hours,” RWFC said in a tweet.

“Clouds have converged over Delhi from all 4 sectors. Widespread Light/Moderate Rainfall with isolated Intense to very intense Spell (3-5cm/hr) likely over Delhi during next 2 hours,” IMD said in a tweet at 7.16 pm.

“Salwan Station Mayur Vihar in East Delhi observed 119.0 mm rainfall from 8:30 AM to 8:30 PM today whereas station NCMRWF, Noida Sector 62 in Gautam Buddha Nagar, UP observed 118.5 mm rainfall,” informed IMD.

In addition to Delhi-NCR, nearby areas such as Panipat, Bhiwani, Jhajjar, Jind, Hisar, Karnal, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Nuh, Rewari, Alwar, Narnaul, Palwal, Hodal, Hathin, Aligarh, Bulandshahr, and Mathura are also expected to experience showers.

Several areas waterlogged

The sudden showers led to waterlogging in numerous areas of the city, disrupting traffic flow and making it challenging for pedestrians. The red alert has been issued till 9 pm. According to visuals shared on social media, waterlogging is being reported in Minto Road, RK Puram, Janpath, Parliament Street, Karol Bagh, Nauroji Nagar, Pant Marg, Mayur Vihar among other locations.

In Noida, waterlogging was reported in areas such as Gaur City, Film City, and several underpasses along the Delhi-Noida Expressway. In Gurugram, water accumulation was reported on major roads including Subhash Nagar and Old Railway Road, as well as other areas.

The National Flash Flood Guidance Bulletin has listed Delhi as one of its ‘areas of concern,’ according to the weather office. The Delhi Lieutenant Governor, in a post on X, advised officials to stay vigilant in response to the ongoing heavy rainfall in the city.

“Apart from ensuring minimum inconvenience to people in general, they are advised to specifically address issues at sites prone to waterlogging, including coaching centres,” he said in the post.
