Innovative nature education programme features art exhibits, workshops, and a documentary screening

The city is set to witness a unique initiative with the launch of the Living Libraries’ Open Studio at Cubbon Park Metro Station on Saturday, July 27. This innovative programme, in collaboration with the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL), aims to bring together naturalists, educators, creatives, and learners of all ages for a community-led participatory programme centred on nature education.

Living Libraries, a project by the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology’s Art in Transit Lab, has been fostering pedagogical programmes since 2014. The initiative seeks to deepen understanding of ecology and shared planetary stewardship through various events, workshops, and exhibitions. The Cubbon Park Metro Station will transform into a vibrant space featuring a mini art exhibit with paintings, film screenings, workshops, and participatory installations created by a community of learners, artists, and educators.

One of the highlights of the Open Studio will be a workshop on creating illustrations for a poster exhibition focused on sustainability. Attendees can also learn the art of origami to craft butterflies and join the Cubbon Crochet Circle to learn crochet techniques. These activities offer a chance to enjoy leisurely walks, connect with others, and engage in hands-on learning experiences in the serene environment of Cubbon Park.

Participants will also have the opportunity to engage with the Cubbon Park Journal, a specially designed tool for sketching and journaling the park’s beauty, encouraging a deeper connection with nature. Additionally, a documentary film by award-winning filmmaker Niret Alva on the illegal ivory trade will be screened, offering a poignant look at the delicate balance between creation and destruction.

The Living Libraries initiative aims to create a mosaic of moments that invite visitors to pause, reflect, and view the world with fresh eyes.

Niret Alva, a faculty member at the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design and Technology, said, “Art in Transit’s vision for 2024 is to see Bangalore as a learning city, creating more opportunities for creative learning and making at metro stations in collaboration with various public transportation agencies.
