Controversy erupts over security on India-Bangladesh border after viral video on ‘easy’ crossing, BSF responds

Shillong, July 29: The issue of India-Bangladesh border security has always been a topic of concern, as many incidents of illegal crossings by Bangladeshi nationals into India have been reported, whether through Tripura, Assam, or Meghalaya.

Recently, a viral video by YouTuber Diwar Hussain has sparked a heated debate about the ease of crossing the India-Bangladesh border.

The video, posted on his YouTube channel, claims to show how effortlessly one can cross the border into Meghalaya without facing any hindrance, he even mocked how the crossing was so easily made as there are no Border Security guards to stop him.

The footage has raised serious concerns among Indian citizens about the effectiveness of border security measures.

In response, the Border Security Force (BSF) has dismissed the video as “misleading” and an attempt to gain internet popularity. The BSF clarified that the video, originally filmed in March 2023, was reposted and depicts outdated conditions in Bangladesh’s border areas. The BSF emphasized that social media users have made unfounded assumptions based on the video without understanding the current security protocols in place.

“Such isolated videos posted on social media with the intention to gain followers and publicity should not overshadow the daily efforts and successes of the BSF in preventing illegal activities along the border,” stated the IG of BSF Meghalaya. He urged the public and media to exercise caution and verify facts before spreading information that could cause unnecessary alarm or damage the reputation of security forces.

The BSF further said it remains dedicated to securing India’s borders with the highest level of integrity and professionalism.

The video in question has since been deleted by its creator, further questioning its authenticity and veracity.

Adding to the concerns, another recent viral video showed Bangladeshi nationals allegedly entering Indian territory in Dawki to illegally mining boulders. In a similar incident, a video captured Bangladeshi individuals throwing stones at Indian tourists in Dawki.

These events have intensified the debate on border security, with many questioning whether crossing the India-Bangladesh border is indeed too easy.

With the ongoing clashes in Bangladesh, pressure groups in Meghalaya have called for heightened vigilance against illegal migration from Bangladesh to India. These groups have mobilised their members, urging them to remain alert to any unauthorised crossings as the demands for robust influx checking mechanisms to be implemented in the state remain uncertain.
