Controversy Erupts Over Mizoram Speaker’s Residence Renovation Costs
Aizawl, Aug 28: The opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) has criticized the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) for excessive spending on the renovation of Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama’s residence.
Documents obtained through an RTI query reveal that the Mizoram PWD Building Division spent ₹23.4 lakh on the renovation and furnishing of the Speaker’s residence, including ₹8.4 lakh for renovation and ₹15 lakh for furniture and other items.
The MNF has accused the ZPM of contradicting their earlier stance on government spending, citing Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s assurance to avoid unnecessary high expenditures on renovations.
“The ZPM is doing the opposite of what they said. They assured the public that they wouldn’t spend high amounts on renovations, but here we see ₹8.4 lakh spent just on the Speaker’s house alone,” an MNF spokesperson said.
The controversy has raised questions about the ZPM’s commitment to financial prudence and their promise to refrain from lavish spending on government officials’ residences. The opposition has demanded clarification from the ruling party on the matter.
