Congress seeks proper road signages to honor eminent personalities of Meghalaya

Shillong, Aug 27: The opposition Congress on Tuesday urged the state government to put proper signages at the entry and exit points of all roads named after eminent personalities.

“I would request the government to put up prominent signages from the entry to exit points of roads named after eminent personalities,” Leader of Opposition Ronnie V Lyngdoh said while raising a supplementary query during the Assembly session.

He cited an example that despite the road being named after the Jaintia freedom fighter U Kiang Nangbah, it is still being called as Jail Road.

Similar is the case with the roads, which are being named after Mahatma Gandhi, Don Bosco and other eminent personalities.

“Therefore, these roads named after these important personalities should be properly displayed…to honor these personalities who have contributed to the state and nation,” Lyngdoh said.

To this, the minister incharge Rakkam A Sangma assured that the department have taken up the matter with the public works department (PWD) and Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) to do the needful.

The minister also noted the suggestion given by TMC legislator from Nongthymmai Charles Pyngrope to correct the name of the Mother Theressa Road to Saint Theressa Road.
