Thenmala: There is a growing demand for the reinstatement of popular train services on the Punalur-Sengottai route.
Prior to the switching from metre-gauge to the broad gauge system, several services operated on this route. This includes four trains from Kollam to Tirunelveli and back, Kollam-Nagore, Kollam-Coimbatore, Kollam-Sengottai-Madurai, and Chennai-Kollam and back.

However, despite the completion of electrification, local train services remain limited. Currently, only a few daily services are available: the Palakkad-Tirunelveli (Palaruvi Express), Madurai-Guruvayur Express, and Chennai-Kollam Mail.
There is a growing demand for the Velankanni-Ernakulam service, which operates only twice a week, often leading to a shortage of tickets. Commuters are calling for this service to be made daily, as it is crucial for passengers travelling to the temples in Nagore, Rameswaram, Pondicherry, Karaikal, and Thirunallar.
Similarly, commuters are advocating for the resumption of the Kollam-Tirunelveli service (06:20 am) and the Tirunelveli-Kollam service (07:00 am). The Palaruvi Express, running at midnight, is deemed unsuitable for the eastern region.
Students travelling to Bengaluru require a train service from Kollam or Virudhunagar. Therefore, there is a need for a Bengaluru-bound train service.
Additionally, the Kollam-Coimbatore service should be extended to Bangalore and resumed. The Kochuveli-Tambaram service is currently suspended temporarily. Passengers are also requesting that the temporary stops at Thenmala and Tindivanam in Tamil Nadu be made permanent.
