Chennai will be the venue for the Crafts Council of India’s bi-annual textiles and accessories show on 9th and 10th August. This two-day exhibition at the MRC Centre will showcase a diverse range of weaves and accessories from across India, offering a unique opportunity to explore the country’s rich textile heritage.

The event coincides with National Handloom Day, observed on 7th August, and will feature over forty participants, including master artisans, designers, weavers, and entrepreneurs. Jayasri Samyukta, executive committee member of the Crafts Council of India, highlighted the exhibition’s growth, “This year, we have doubled the number of exhibitors, each uniquely presenting their craft.”

Visitors can expect to see a variety of handcrafted items such as Vimor’s vintage revival silk cotton sarees, handblock prints from Pracheen, Ramkumar Halder’s dhakai jamdanis, and more. The show will also include contemporary kurtas from Kaayaa, Indo-Western outfits from Hiranya, and embroidered co-ords from Piar. Anavila will present its new collection in whites and pastels.

The exhibition aims to facilitate direct interaction between customers and the creators of these textiles. Shripal Shah, founder of the Ahmedabad-based brand Asal, emphasized the importance of this connection, “We focus on the traditional practice of making yarn through a ‘takli’ spindle. We hope to raise awareness about the significance of handspun yarn and non-violent silk.”
