Chennai: Police conducted a surprise raid at a gated community housing SRM University students and found contraband, including hookah, in 90% of the flats. On Saturday, 21 people, including 11 students, were arrested for drug possession. Officials said dropouts lured students into narcotics by offering cheaper prices for ganja and connecting them to peddlers in states like Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Students discreetly brought back ganja by train from their hometowns and distributed it among peers.

Narcotics Scandal Rocks SRM University: 30 Students Arrested in Massive Raid
The raid was executed on August 31, 2024, early in the morning, taking students and faculty by surprise. The Tamil Nadu police, along with the NCB, led this large-scale crackdown, highlighting the seriousness of the issue at hand. The operation revealed a significant haul of marijuana (ganja), along with various other narcotics, including banned pills and “bhang,” from multiple hostels.
More than 30 students were arrested on the spot. These students, who were part of a private hostel network, are now facing serious legal consequences.The arrested students were immediately taken to a nearby private wedding hall, which had been converted into a temporary interrogation center by the police.
Parents Demand Action, Accountability, and Safety
The raid has sparked widespread controversy, with the public and parents questioning how such an organized drug network could operate within the campus. The administration’s apparent lack of oversight has come under intense scrutiny. Many are demanding accountability from college officials, with calls for resignations growing louder.
