Chennai Metro phase 2: Driverless tunnels from Venugopal Nagar to Kellys to be ready by Dec 2026

Chennai Metro Rail has completed the work of 7 tunnels in the second phase of the project.

Chennai: Driverless metro tunnels from Venugopal Nagar to Kellys are expected to be ready by Dec 2026. Part of the 45.4 km corridor-3, the 18 km stretch is being built by Tata Projects, with over 60% of the work completed, including three stations. Similarly, Chennai Metro Rail Project Phase 2 Route 3 tunneling machine named Kolli has completed its mission and arrived at Otteri Metro Station. Chennai Metro Rail has completed 7 tunnel boring machines in Phase II.

Chennai Metro Rail Expansion

Route 3 will be constructed from Madhavaram Dairy to Sirucheri Chipgad for a length of 45.4 km with 19 high-level metro stations and 28 tunnel metro stations. Route 4 from Lighthouse to Poontamalli Workshop will be 26.1 km long with 18 high-level metro stations and 9 tunnel metro stations. are to be set up.

Likewise, route 5 will be 44.6 km long from Madhavaram to Choshinganallur with 39 elevated metro stations and 6 tunnel metro stations. Route 3 will cover the first 9 km from Madhavaram Dairy to Kellis. The tunnel construction works for the length are being executed by Tata Projects and 7 tunnel boring machines are being used for this purpose.

Tunneling Breakthrough

Tunneling machine Kolli (S-81) started tunneling work on route 3 (up line) on 11.07.2023 at Ayanavaram Metro station and completed 903 meters long tunnel work and reached Otteri station yesterday on 29.08.2024. So far 6 mining machines have been completed by Tata Projects under contract TU-01. Chennai Metro Rail has completed the work of 7 tunnels in the second phase of the project.

The tunnel section between Ayanavaram and Otteri is the most complex in the first 500-meter tunnel run with a sharp 220-meter radius curve and the last 200-meter tunnel run with 280-meter radius curves was completed by the tunneling machine Kolli. Also, this tunnel operation faced huge challenges like passing through densely populated areas and more than 100 bore wells and completing the tunnel work without any problem for the people, according to officials.
