Chennai: Chennai’s long-awaited dream of electric buses is set to become a reality, with the Tamil Nadu government sanctioning Rs 111.50 crore to develop infrastructure across six depots. The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will establish facilities for charging and maintaining 500 e-buses at depots in Perambur-II, Tondiarpet-I, Vyasarpadi, Poonamallee, KK Nagar-I, and Perumbakkam-I.
“Companies will start delivering electric buses to Tamil Nadu in the next few months, at least in six months time. Therefore it is expected that the electric buses will come into operation in Chennai at the beginning of next year.
For this, bus routes and depots for safe parking of buses and charging units for charging the buses have been found and the work is about to start,” according to officials.
Chennai’s green wheels: Electric bus project gets World Bank funding
While the use of electric buses has already been expanded to a large extent in important cities of the country including Delhi and Bangalore, now the work is accelerating in Chennai. Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) will launch a new electric bus scheme with World Bank funding. The total cost of this project is around Rs. 959 crore, of which the World Bank is providing 70 per cent and the remaining amount is provided by the state government.
Under the scheme, a contract for procurement of 500 low-floor electric buses was floated last January. At present, the Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs.111.50 crores to provide facilities like charging units for electric buses.
In the first phase of the World Bank-funded project, MTC plans to procure 100 AC and 400 non-AC electric buses that can operate at low cost. The contract is expected to be opened and tendered by the end of this (August) or early September.
