Chennai: In a surprise inspection, the Chennai District Food Safety Department seized 600 kg of spoiled goat legs and meat from two stalls in Saidapet area in Chennai. The meat, which was intended for sale, was found to be contaminated with harmful bacteria, including streptococcus and E.coli.

According to Dr Satish, Designated Officer of the Chennai District Food Safety Department, the inspection was conducted at Aladiya and Rajmat Mutton Chicken Stalls in Saidapet. The seized meat was found to be moldy and was stored in a refrigerator without proper maintenance.

The department’s investigation revealed that the spoiled meat was distributed not only to small shops but also to star hotels in various areas, including Delhi and Kanyakumari. The meat was transported by train from other states without proper receipts or documentation.

Dr Satish warned consumers to be cautious when purchasing meat, emphasizing the importance of checking for hygiene standards and ensuring that the meat is stored properly. He also advised against buying meat without proper receipts.

Unhygienic Meat Sales Exposed: Chennai Authorities Take Action

The seized meat was destroyed, and the stalls were sealed and fined. The department is conducting further investigations to identify those who purchased meat from these shops.

This incident follows a similar seizure of 1,700 kg of spoiled mutton in Egmore a few days ago. The Chennai Food Safety Department has vowed to continue its crackdown on unhygienic meat sales to ensure public health and safety.
