Chennai: A city court on Wednesday directed jail authorities to produce former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji in person before the court on August 8 (Thursday) for framing of charges against him in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Chennai court also extended judicial custody of Balaji till August 8
Balaji, who was arrested by the ED in the money laundering case last year, was produced before Principal Sessions Judge S Alli through video conferencing from the Puzhal prison, where he is currently lodged in judicial custody, and the court also extended his judicial custody in the case till August 8.
Balaji filed a plea before the court on Wednesday seeking to adjourn the proceedings relating to framing of charges against him.
“Criminal miscellaneous petition is pending. Adjourned to August 8, 2024. Directed to be produced in person. Call for status report from the prison about the physical condition of accused (Balaji) adjourned to August 8, 2024. Remand extended till then,” the judge said in the order on Wednesday, news agency PTI reported.
ED arrested Balaji in money laundering case on June 14 last year
Balaji was arrested by the ED on June 14 last year in the money laundering case connected to a cash-for-jobs scam when he was the transport minister of Tamil Nadu during an earlier AIADMK government.
The ED filed the chargesheet against Balaji in the money laundering case August 12 last year.

Balaji’s bail plea in the money laundering case is currently pending before the Supreme Court, where he moved against an order of the Madras High Court declining to grant him bail in the money laundering case.
Madras High Court earlier dismissed Balaji’s bail plea in money laundering case
The Madras High Court earlier dismissed the plea of Balaji seeking bail in the money laundering case. It, while dismissing his bail plea, had said that if he is released on bail in a case of this nature, it will send a wrong signal and it will be against larger public interest.
The High Court, while rejecting the bail plea of Balaji, had directed the trial court to dispose of the case against him within a time frame and to conduct the trial in the case on a day-to-day basis in accordance with the guidelines of the apex court.
Meanwhile, the Madras High Court on Wednesday issued notice to the ED on a plea by Balaji seeking to set aside a sessions court order refusing to discharge him from the money laundering case and to set aside all further proceedings pending before the Principal Sessions Judge Alli. The High Court posted the matter for August 14.
