The flooding was primarily due to the Mambalam canal’s outfall into the Adyar River near Nandanam, which goes against the river’s flow. During water releases from Chembarambakkam, the Adyar swells and forces water back into the canal, leading to floods. The corporation is now realigning the outfall to match the river’s course and is also clearing encroachments that obstruct the canal’s flow.
