Chennai: In a shocking case reported from Chennai, 3 people working at the bar of a posh hotel were allegedly beaten up and also kept in confinement. The trio belonged to the northeastern part of the country and hailed from Manipur and Mizoram. The workers were reportedly held back after their working hours on Saturday.
Hotel management accused waiters of stealing
According to a report in NDTV, the waiters claimed that the hotel management accused them of stealing money (Rs 1.5 lakh) and locked them up. They were also reportedly beaten up by their employers.
Meanwhile the hotel management has denied all the allegations and said that the workers swindled money. In their defence the workers claimed that they used to accept money on their personal Google Pay if the payment system at the hotel failed. They would then transfer the money to the hotel’s account, after deducting 10 per cent of their ‘tip’ This they claimed is the common practice.
The workers and the hotel management have both filed counter complaints in the matter with the local police. The police said that they are investigating the matter. Bank statements of the three workers and the hotel’s bank account are being examined. Investigations will proceed based on this, said officials. So far no arrests have been made in the case.
One of the 3 workers who faced this ordeal (being confined to a room) had been working at the eatery for 4 years. Another one was here for a year, while the third had joined recently and had completed just 4 months at the place, said police.
The matter came to light after a social worker posted about the plight of these workers online. The Chennai Police have said that they would take appropriate action in the case and the guilty will not be spared.
