Charges against rioters

News18 has accessed copies of all 11 FIRs lodged across several police stations including Amherst Street, Maidan, Hastings, Alipore, South Port, New Market, Muchipara, Burrabazar, and Jorasanko.

“We have initiated 11 cases and arrested 147 persons as of now. Corresponding sections of attempt to murder, rioting, rioting with deadly weapons, arson, damage of public property, and inflicting grievous injury on public servants under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been slapped against the offenders,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

Cop loses eye, several others injured

Following the incidents of violence during the protest march towards chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s seat of power at Nabanna, at least five police officers were grievously injured. A traffic police sergeant, Debashish Chakraborty, lost his sight in one eye as he was hit by a piece of brick.

The medical report of Chakraborty, accessed by News 18, says “trauma to the left eye after being hit by a brick has caused permanent and severe tear of cornea”.

The unrest, marked by intense confrontation between the protesters and the police, underscores the growing tensions in the city. The authorities are continuing their crackdown, with more arrests likely in the coming days as investigations proceed.

Sayan Lahiri and Suvankar Haldar, two of the organisers of the protest rally, have been picked up, said a senior police officer of Kolkata Police.
