Cabinet nod for civil enclave in Tier III cities in Bihar and West Bengal

New Delhi: “Increased air connectivity is great news for tourism and commercial growth,” posted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, just as the Union Cabinet approved of airport projects at Bagdgora, West Bengal and Bihta, Bihar for an estimated total cost of INR 2,962 crore. The aim of these civil enclaves is to ensure seamless travel to and fro from these places.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs chaired by PM, Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for the development of a New Civil Enclave at Bihta, Patna, Bihar and Bagdgora airport at an estimated cost of INR 1413 crore and INR 1,549 crore respectively.

Salient features of the Bihar project

– The proposed New Integrated Terminal Building will span an area of 66,000 sqm

– Terminal will handle 3000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP)

– Terminal will have an annual capacity to handle 50 lakh passengers

– This capacity is subject to further expansion by another 50 lakhs with the ultimate capacity reaching to one crore passengers per annum

– Construction of Apron to accommodate 10 aircraft parking bays to accommodate narrowbody aircraft

The new project will directly address the concerns arising due to excess strain on Patna airport. Although AAI is already constructing a new terminal building at Patna Airport, limited availability of land is proving a hindrance to further expansion.

– The proposed Terminal Building will span an area of70,390 sqm

– The terminal will handle 3000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP)

– The terminal will have an annual capacity to handle 10 million passengers

– Construction of Apron to accommodate 10 aircraft parking bays to accommodate narrowbody aircraft

– Multi-Level Car Parking

The proposed enclave will stress on the sustainability initiative focussing on green building, integrating renewable energy sources and maximizing natural lighting to minimize ecological footprint
This development is poised to significantly enhance Bagdogra Airport’s operational efficiency and passenger experience, reinforcing its role as a pivotal air travel hub for the region.

As India is gearing up for more aircraft and rising passenger traffic, development of newer and advanced airports along with modernisation of existing airports is the need of the hour. Keeping this in view, the cabinet committee has stressed on the rising need of Tier II and Tier III connectivity in India and approved the airport projects in Bihar and West Bengal.
