In today’s rapidly evolving world, the shift towards paperless and cashless transactions has become a defining feature of modern life. This trend is particularly evident in various public services, where convenience and efficiency are prioritised. A prime example of this shift is the recent initiative by the South Western Railway division, which introduced a QR-based ticketing system for its passengers. Following in the footsteps of this digital transformation, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is also stepping up its game. BMTC is preparing to launch digital passes for its passengers, marking a significant move towards paperless and cashless transactions within the city’s public transport system. This initiative is expected to greatly benefit commuters by providing them with a more convenient and seamless travel experience.

Starting from September 15, BMTC passengers will be able to obtain their daily, weekly, and monthly passes digitally through the Namma BMTC mobile app. This marks a major shift from the traditional system, where passes were manually issued by conductors on buses or at bus terminals. With the new system, commuters no longer need to carry physical passes or cash to buy them. Instead, they can simply download the Namma BMTC app from the Play Store, select the type of pass they need — whether it’s daily, weekly, or monthly — fill in their details, and upload a photograph. Once they confirm their purchase and make the payment, the digital pass will be issued and available on their mobile device.

The process of obtaining a digital pass is designed to be straightforward and user-friendly. After downloading the app, users need to select the pass type, enter the required details, and upload a photo. Upon confirming the details and making the payment, the pass is instantly generated and stored in the app. Commuters must carry a valid identification document along with their digital pass during their travels. This ID will serve as proof of identity when required.Additionally, BMTC has implemented a system where passengers can validate their passes on the go. QR codes will be displayed inside the buses, and passengers can scan these codes using their mobile devices. This scan will verify the pass and its validity, which can then be shown to the bus conductor or driver as proof of purchase.
