BJP Appoints Dilip Jaiswal as Bihar State President Ahead of Key Elections

27

In a significant organizational change, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has appointed Dilip Jaiswal as the new State President for Bihar. Currently serving as the Minister for Land Reforms and Revenue in Nitish Kumar’s government, Jaiswal’s elevation comes at a crucial time as the state gears up for the upcoming elections.

Who is Dilip Jaiswal?

Dilip Jaiswal, a three-time Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), has a long-standing association with the BJP. He represents the Purnia, Kishanganj, and Araria districts in the Bihar Legislative Council, having won his seat in 2022 from the local authority constituency. This constituency includes votes from elected representatives like mukhiyas (village heads), panchayat samiti members, district council members, and ward representatives. Jaiswal’s victory was notable for the significant margin by which he won.

Political Journey and Influence

Jaiswal’s journey in politics spans over two decades, during which he served as the Treasurer for the Bihar BJP. His influence extends beyond the state as he was also appointed as the party in-charge for Sikkim. His first ministerial role came when the BJP joined the ruling coalition in Bihar, marking a new chapter in his political career.

In the politics of the Seemanchal region, Jaiswal is seen as a prominent Hindutva figure. His candidature from the Muslim-majority Kishanganj Lok Sabha constituency in 2014, where he was the first Hindu candidate fielded by the BJP, underscored his importance within the party. Although he lost that election by a margin of two lakh votes, it solidified his standing as a key player in the region.

Background and Personal Life

Originally from Khagaria, Jaiswal has been associated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and manages a medical college. His political career began with his election to the Legislative Council in 2009. He also served as the Chairman of the Seed Corporation when the BJP and JD(U) first came to power in Bihar in 2005. At 61, Jaiswal has largely worked behind the scenes, managing party organization and finances.

Despite his significant role within the party, Jaiswal lacks statewide recognition. He belongs to the Vaishya community, which is considered a backward caste in Bihar. His appointment as State President appears to be as much a choice of Nitish Kumar as of the BJP, given their coalition dynamics.

Challenges Ahead

Taking on the role of State President presents new challenges for Jaiswal. With Bihar elections on the horizon, his effectiveness will be closely watched. While he enjoys support in the Seemanchal region, expanding his influence beyond this area will be crucial. The position will also require him to relinquish his ministerial role due to the BJP’s policy of one person, one post.

Dilip Jaiswal’s new role is not just a test of his political acumen but also a strategic move by the BJP as they prepare for a pivotal election season in Bihar. His ability to navigate the state’s complex political landscape will be key to the party’s success in the upcoming elections.
