Bangladesh turmoil: Trade is on at Boder Haats of Tripura
Guwahati: While Bangladesh is in turmoil, traders of Tripura and the neighbouring country on Tuesday took part in the ‘Border Haat’. Meghalaya government had suspended the operations of ‘Border Haats’ (markets) along the India-Bangladesh border.
The trade took place in Srinagar (south Tripura)-Purba Madhugram (Bangladesh) and the weekly markets functioned normally. An official of Tripura government said that as per schedule, 27 local traders of Bangladesh and Tripura participated in the ‘Border Haat’ with their products and various goods. “ There were fewer customers as the turmoil in Bangladesh ‘Border Haat’ has been functioning irregularly.”
A top official of the Tripura Industries and Commerce Department said that the ‘Border Haat’ was not held on August 6 following Bangladesh authorities’ request.
Tripura’s second ‘Border Haat’ — Kasba (Bangladesh)-Kamlasagar (Tripura) in Sepahijala district remained closed in March 2020 after the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Meghalaya government on Monday suspended the operations of ‘Border Haats’ (markets) along the India-Bangladesh border.
An official of the Meghalaya government said that in pursuance to an order issued by the Commissioner and Secretary to the state’s Commerce and Industries Department, the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills district in an order has informed that all ‘Border Haats’ in East Khasi Hills District are suspended for operations with immediate effect and until further orders.The first Border Haat was inaugurated in 2011 between the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya at Kalaichar and Kurigram in Bangladesh.According to the officials, 10 more ‘Border Haats’ were approved along the India-Bangladesh border at Tripura and Meghalaya. Out of them, six are in Meghalaya, and four in Tripura.
Four northeastern states — Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km) — share an 1,880 km border with Bangladesh.
An official of the Tripura government’s Industry and Commerce Department said that the trade between Tripura and Bangladesh has increased substantially from Rs 230.24 crore in 2013-14 to Rs 715.98 crore in 2023-24.
During the financial year 2023-24, the value of exports from Tripura to Bangladesh was Rs 12.31 crore while the import was at Rs 703.67.Bangladesh exports various fish, cement, food items, steel sheets, PVC pipes, soft drinks, and cotton waste to Tripura and other northeastern states while it imports commodities such as broken stone, maize, agarbatti, fresh ginger, dry chillies, vegetable seeds, and wood apple among others from the region.
