Attack on Thadou leader challenge to Manipur’s integrity: Biren Singh

Alleged armed miscreants vandalised and fired bullets at the residence of BJP spokesperson Michael Lamjathang Haokip of Phailien village under Churachandpur police station in Manipur on Sunday. Kerosene was poured on the walls and two rooms were set on fire.

The motive behind the attack appears to be his participation as a panellist in a local TV channel. A senior police officer who does not want to be named told ET, “Haokip was not present in the house when the militants barged in. The miscreants started dismantling and torched the properties. There were around 30 miscreants.”

Haokip stated on X, “We trust in God’s protection and guidance. Our parents and residence in Peniel village have been targeted again for the second time by armed miscreants amidst the Manipur violence. We are offering our prayers and many are standing with us in prayer for the Thadou community.”

Chief minister N Biren Singh stated on X, “The attack carried out on the family members of Micheal Lamjathang, a leader of the Thadou community, one of the oldest among the ethnic tribes of Manipur, as well as a BJP spokesperson, by vandalising his house was an act of cowardice. I consider this personal harm being put on one of our recognised tribes as a direct challenge to the unity and integrity of the state. Attacks on any particular community of the recognised tribes of Manipur as well as the attack on the family of the BJP spokesperson are condemned in the strongest terms. We will initiate appropriate legal action against the culprits.”

At least 226 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.
