In commemoration of National Sports Day 2024, the Department of Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland in association with Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Nagaland, today conducted Inter-School Athletics Competition at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.

YRS Director Kethosituo Sekhose informed that the department is commemorating National Sports Day in the state for two days, one for Athletics Meet for schools on August 28 and another for Cash Award Ceremony for meritorious sportspersons of Nagaland, scheduled for August 29.

Sekhose said that CEO Nagaland came forward to co-host the athletics meet today to propagate the youngster’s right as eligible voters after attaining 18 years.

He said the election department had sponsored prizes for best athletes for both boys and girls in four categories at Rs. 4000 each.
The meet featured race, long jump and triple jump and witnessed 309 participants from Fernwood School, Mezhiir Higher Secondary School, G. Rio Higher Secondary School, Mt. Hermon Higher Secondary School, Dainty Buds School, Chandmari Higher Secondary School, Northfield School, Goraggio School, RDNMS, Vineyard School, Don Bosco Higher Secondary School and Minister’s Hill Higher Secondary School Kohima.

Mentionably, National Sports Day is observed on August 29 every year.  The day highlights the importance of sports and physical activities for overall health. It marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

Cash Award Ceremony
The Cash Award Ceremony for meritorious sportspersons of Nagaland will take place on August 29 at 11:00 AM at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Hall ‘B.’ Kohima.
Nagaland’s Youth Resources & Sports advisor S. Keoshu Yimkhiung  will address the ceremony as the special guest.
The programme will chaired by Megolhu Dolie, Additional Director YRS while welcome address will be delivered by Anthony Ngullie, Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports, Nagaland.
Fit India pledge will be administered on the occasion.
Short speech will also be delivered by Olivi Thurr, Assistant Election Officer, Kohima while vote of thanks will be proposed by Khriehutuo Tsira, senior state coach.
