Guwahati, July 29: A wild male elephant was found dead at Shilphata No. 1, on the Nagaon-Karbi Anglong border, sparking concerns among locals and forest officials. The elephant’s body showed signs of injury, with a swollen front left thigh, leading officials to suspect infighting within its herd as the cause of death.

The forest department has initiated a thorough investigation, including a post-mortem examination, to determine the exact reason behind the elephant’s death. The area is a known elephant corridor, and officials are working to ensure the safety and protection of the remaining elephant population.

This incident comes on the heels of another recent elephant death in the region, where two officials from Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) Township were arrested for attempting to conceal the electrocution death of a female wild elephant and failing to report it to the forest department. Conservationists have expressed outrage over the incidents, highlighting the need for increased protection and monitoring of elephant populations in the region.
