Assam: Sonowal Rallies for sustainable solution against erosion and flooding in Dibrugarh & Chabua
DIBRUGARH, Aug 13: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal visited the flood affected and erosion prone areas in and around Dibrugarh and Chabua to assess the work done to protect the areas from flooding.
Sonowal also rallied for sustainable solution against erosion and flooding. Sonowal also confirmed that the govt has begun scouting for a technically sound as IIT Guwahati has already been approached for technical analysis of flooding in Dibrugarh by their experts and work out a lasting solution for erosion and flooding.
It is to be noted that Sonowal, who is also the MP of Lok Sabha for the Dibrugarh LSC, visited flood affected areas in and around Dibrugarh on July 20 to assess the damage.
Sonowal visited the flood affected areas from Mohanaghat near Bogibeel upto Aithan to assess the damage caused by erosion and artificial floods. The recent floods and erosion have severely impacted daily life in Dibrugarh.
He reviewed the current situation and sewage management issues, instructing officials to act swiftly to alleviate public hardships. Sonowal emphasized the need for rapid implementation of permanent solutions and revealed that IIT Guwahati will conduct a study on the factors contributing to artificial floods in Dibrugarh.

The institute will prepare a masterplan and offer technical advice and support to the government. Sonowal noted that the state government has formally requested IIT’s assistance and assured that necessary actions would be taken based on their recommendations.The Union minister also said that RIDB’s nearly ₹350 crore project will begin soon, aiming to address issues such as erosion, artificial flood prevention, and drainage system improvements.
Sonowal noted that measures like geo bags are already being implemented to combat erosion. Additionally, IIT Guwahati will be consulted for sewer management in Chabua city, contributing to long-term solutions for the flooding and erosion problems in both Dibrugarh and Chabua. Both central and state governments are working together to accelerate sustainable development and resolve these issues effectively, Sonowal added.
He also took part in the Har Ghar Tiranga rally Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal took part in the Tiranga Yatra bike rally organized by the Dibrugarh District BJP and Yuva Morcha in celebration of the 78th Independence Day, as part of the Har Ghar Tiranga Abhiyan. Prior to the rally, Sonowal paid floral tributes to the statue of Saheed Kushal Konwar in Dibrugarh.
The rally witnessed hundreds of bikes and scooties starting off from Chowkidingee via Thana Chariali, Phul Bagan, Amollapatty to end at the Chowkidingee.
