Guwahati, Aug 12: Assam Minister Atul Bora announced on Sunday that the next round of discussions to resolve the state’s border dispute with Mizoram is scheduled for January in Guwahati. The talks aim to find a permanent solution to the long-standing issue, ensuring peace and security for residents near the inter-state boundary.

Bora, who oversees border protection and development, returned from talks in Aizawl and briefed reporters on the progress made. He noted that the discussions had stalled due to Mizoram’s assembly elections last year but expressed optimism about the forthcoming talks.

A ministerial group from Mizoram will visit Guwahati for the talks, and both sides have reiterated their commitment to resolving the border issue amicably. The recent discussions in Aizawl marked the first meeting after a 20-month hiatus, with the previous discussion held in November 2022.

During the visit, the Assam delegation also met Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhawma, and both sides agreed to continue a zero-tolerance policy towards smuggled areca nuts. Plans for joint cultural and sports events before March 31 were also announced to improve relations.

The Assam-Mizoram border dispute has a decades-old history, with the two states having different interpretations of the boundary demarcation. The dispute has led to skirmishes, economic blockades, and casualties on both sides. The upcoming talks in January offer a glimmer of hope for a permanent solution to the issue.
