Assam authorities beef up search as ULFA(I) claims to have planted 24 bombs

Guwahati: The banned ULFA(I) claimed on Thursday to have planted bombs at 24 locations across Assam, prompting security forces to deploy teams to search for explosives.

In an email purportedly from the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) (Independent) sent to media houses, including PTI, the terror outfit asserted that the bombs did not detonate due to “technical failure”. The email provided a list identifying the precise locations of 19 bombs and mentioned that the locations of five more explosives could not be determined. It requested public cooperation in defusing the bombs.

A senior police officer stated that bomb disposal squads have been sent to all the locations listed by ULFA(I), but there have been no reports of any bombs or explosives being recovered. “Bomb disposal squads, metal detectors, and sniffer dogs have been dispatched to every location. So far, we have not received any information regarding the recovery of bombs,” he added.

When contacted, a senior officer at Assam Police headquarters told PTI that all Superintendents of Police (SPs) in the districts, particularly those mentioned in the list by the anti-peace talk faction of ULFA, have been alerted and instructed to conduct a thorough search of the areas.

However, some local police officials in Nagaon, Lakhimpur, and Sivasagar reported that they have recovered some “bomb-like materials” from the sites.

Of the 24 locations, eight are in Guwahati. These include an open field at Last Gate in Dispur, near the official residences of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and other ministers. Another location is the Satgaon road towards the Army cantonment in Narengi in Guwahati. In addition, Ashram Road, Panbazar, Jorabat, Bhetapara, Maligaon, and Rajgarh in the capital city have also been cited as bomb sites.

Places in Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, and Golaghat districts have also been named where ULFA(I) claimed to have planted bombs.

Police have closed all roads in and around the locations mentioned in the email. Senior police officials have been deployed to all the sites and are overseeing the search operations. PTI
