Aizawl: Marking another achievement in the government’s Act East policy, Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated India’s 500th community radio station at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Aizawl, Mizoram, on Thursday.

In addition to launching ‘Apna Radio 90.0 FM’ alongside Union Minister of State for I&B, L. Murugan, and Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Minister Vaishnaw also announced the recipients of the 10th National Community Radio Awards.

Minister Vaishnaw, who also oversees the Railways, stated, “This landmark event in India’s community radio movement will significantly impact the lives of those within Apna Radio’s broadcast range.” He also shared that Budget-2024 has allocated unprecedented funds for the Northeast region’s railway budget.

This allocation is expected to fulfil Mizoram’s longstanding aspiration for robust railway connectivity. Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed that the Apna Radio Station at IIMC Aizawl is set to open a new chapter in the state’s communication narrative.

MoS Murugan highlighted that community radio stations, unlike commercially driven private radio channels, are established with a dedication to providing information to the most remote communities.

He emphasized that these stations become particularly crucial during natural disasters. The ‘National Community Radio Awards’ are typically presented annually.
