Arunachal Pradesh: Tawang District Disaster Management Authority Conducts Expedition To Survey Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Risk
Itanagar, Aug 28: A team led by Deputy Commissioner Kanki Darang, conducted an expedition to survey the risk of Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) at Dungchhen Tso, a high-altitude lake above Bhaggajang pilgrimage site, from August 26-27.
The team, comprising officials from various departments, Indian Army, and Sashastra Seema Bal, trekked to the lake, located at 4500 meters above sea level, and found it to be a non-glacial lake with a single outlet. However, they noted that if the outlet is blocked or affected by climate change, the lake could pose a threat to settlements like Nuranang and villages along the Tawangchhu river.
The expedition was undertaken in compliance with an advisory from the National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India. The team faced challenging weather conditions, including a heavy storm and chilling cold, during their journey.
The survey aimed to assess the potential risk of GLOF and take preventive measures to ensure the safety of communities downstream. The team returned safely to headquarters on August 27, with valuable data and insights to inform future disaster management efforts.
