Srinagar- Police on Tuesday foiled Apni Party protest march to Lal Chowk against the centre for failing to restore statehood to the erstwhile J&K state, which was downgraded into a union territory after the centre abolished its special status under Article 370 on August 5, 2019.
Led by the party senior leader and vice-president, Ghulam Hassan Mir, dozens of Apni Party workers and activists took out a protest rally from the Apni Party head office at Abiguzar here this afternoon, demanding restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.
Chanting slogans “restore statehood to J&K, restore people’s constitutional rights ”, the protesters asked the centre to fulfill its promise made on the floor of the Parliament before scrapping the special status of the erstwhile state five years ago.
Five years have already passed since the special status of under Articles 370 and 35-A which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir was scrapped, however, the union government is yet to restore the constitutional status of the erstwhile state, they claimed.
A pose of police deployed in advance, however, prompted the protesters to disperse, no sooner they tried to march towards city centre Lal Chowk to register their protest.
The Apni Party vice-president Ghulam Hassan Mir later talking to the reporters said the protest was organized to convey a strong message on behalf of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to the centre to do away with delaying tactics and adopt its promise of restoring the statehood to the erstwhile state on the ground.
He also asked the centre to implement the Supreme Court of India’s orders to hold Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir in the month of September.
“We have gathered here to register our strong protest against the centre for failing to restore statehood to J&K. It has been five years since the centre on August 5, 2019 abolished Article 370 and assured the Parliament that the same will be restored in its original form once the situation normalizes in J&K,” said Mir.
