A section of the under-construction Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge over the Ganges river in Bihar, valued at Rs 1,710 crore, collapsed on Saturday, marking the third collapse of the cable-stayed bridge in the past three years. The collapse occurred between pillar numbers nine and ten, but no injuries were reported, reports The Indian Express.
This is the 12th bridge collapse since June 18 this year and 12th incident this year.
Video footage showing the collapse of the bridge—connecting Bhagalpur and Khagaria districts—has gone viral, with locals in the footage expressing alarm as the structure gave way. The bridge, intended to span 3.16 kilometers when completed, had previously suffered collapses in 2022 and again a year later.

The Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge, a flagship project of the Nitish Kumar government, is intended to be a vital link between the northern and southern parts of Bihar. It aims to connect the Kosi region, which includes Khagaria, Saharsa, Madhepura, and Supaul, with Bhagalpur, Munger, Jamui, and also Deoghar and Godda in neighbouring Jharkhand.
Construction began in 2014, but the project is only 45% complete.
Khagaria District Magistrate Amit Kumar Pandey stated that the bridge was deemed faulty and is being dismantled by the contractor as directed by the Patna High Court.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, former deputy chief minister responsible for road construction until January, criticised the Nitish Kumar government, alleging that a report from IIT Roorkee had identified flaws in the bridge’s design that were ignored.
In response, Senior BJP leader Vijay Kumar Sinha, the current Deputy Chief Minister and head of the road construction department, blamed the previous administration’s lack of oversight. Sinha also expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor’s performance and promised to inform the high court of any negligence.
