Al-Qaeda after Nitish Kumar? Authorities act as Bihar CMO gets threatening email attributed to terror group

Bihar Police said that they have registered a case after an email threatening to blow up the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) in Patna surfaced earlier this month.

On July 16, the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) received a menacing email from an unidentified account claiming to be linked to Al-Qaeda. The email threatened that the CMO premises would be “blown up with a bomb,” and added that even the special police of Bihar could not prevent the attack.

In response, the police and Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) initiated an investigation. A First Information Report was subsequently filed at Sachiwalaya police station on August 2, based on the statement of Station House Officer Sanjeev Kumar.

The case has been registered under Sections 351 (4) and (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Section 66 (F) of the IT Act against unidentified persons, according to the police.

“We are further looking into it,” the officials were quoted as saying by the news agency Asian News International (ANI) while talking about the ongoing efforts to trace the source of the threat and ensure the security of the CMO premises.

Earlier in June, a similar bomb threat email was sent to Patna Airport which was later declared a hoax after the initial inquiry.

“A bomb threat through email was received at JPNI Airport Patna and 41 other airports. The Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) Meeting is convened at the airport. BTAC has found the threat to be non-specific. Further follow-up actions are in process,” the Patna Airport director said in a statement.

A total of forty-one airports across the country received bomb threat emails and each of them was declared a hoax following anti-sabotage checks by security agencies that lasted for hours.

The airports scrambled contingency measures, carried out anti-sabotage checks and swept the terminals following the respective Bomb Threat Assessment Committee recommendations.
