Melesai Dawhuo is champion of open category

Melesai Dawhuo today bagged the champion title in the open category of the 20th Nagaland State Chess Championship 2024, which concluded here today under the aegis of Nagaland Chess Association (NCA)
Dawhuo was awarded with a cash prize of Rs 30,000 along with trophy, which was handed over by Nagaland Youth Resources & Sports Advisor S Keoshu Yimkhiung at the valedictory function here this afternoon.
Kevilekho Zumvu and Toivi Yeptho stood second and 3rd position and awarded with Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively.
Bovito Yeptho stood 4th position and received Rs. 7000.
Kughaho Kiho, Viseyie Yano, Khoveto Vero, Khrielie Sano, Heilamgumbe and Ketholelie Nisa were also awarded with Rs. 4000 each for figuring into 5th to 10th position respectively.
Top four players in this open category will represent Nagaland at the forthcoming National Chess championship at Haryana from August 17-27.
Intovi Awomi, Shurhozhalie Sebastian Solo and Pulonito Hesso stood first, second and third position under 18 years category and awarded with Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 respectively.
Viboka Awomi and Muzaveto Phesao stood 4th and 5th position and received Rs. 1500 and Rs. 1000 respectively.
Jititho Nyekha, Vesho Doulo and Neipedezo Metha bagged first, second and third position under 14 years category and awarded with Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000 and Rs. 2000 respectively.
Gihuca Chishi and Mereh Doulo stood 4th and 5th position and received Rs. 1500 and Rs. 1000 respectively.
Shenikali Hesso has been declared as the Best female player and received Rs. 5000.
Sede Nagi was declared as best player of 60 years and above and awarded with Rs. 5000.
Noune Terujha bagged the title of best player under 7 years and awarded with Rs. 1000 along with trophy.
76 players registered for the championship. 68 years Kekhwewe. Sekhamo from Kohima district was the oldest player and Reku Haikam (6 years) from Peren district as the youngest player.
Keoshu is new president of NCA
The Search Committee of NCA has announced S. Keoshu Yimkhiung as the new president of NCA for the tenure 2024- 27.
Other new team of NCA will includes; working president P. Khezhie, vice presidents- Mughaho Awomi and Mohokiya Apon, honorary secretary- Vekukho Soho, joint secretary- Melesai Dawhuo, Mengise Haikam and Shiniho Inakhe Jakhalu, treasurer- Sede Nagi, women coordinator- Dziesenuo Khoube and Khrienuo Riipreo and Helie Riipreo as advisor.
This was announced by Search Committee convenor Kekhwewe Sekhamo
“This year’s has been particularly special as it marks two decades of our state’s commitment to fostering the game of chess,” said Keoshu while addressing the valedictory function.
Congratulating all the winners, he said “You have set a high standard for future competitions, and we look forward to seeing how you will continue to excel in the game.”
He challenged the chess players to carry forward the spirit of respect, and passion for the game.
“Chess is not just a contest of intellect but a bridge that connects us all, transcending age, background, and experience,” he said.
May this championship inspire all of us to continue playing, learning, and growing-both on and off the board, he added.
Earlier, chief arbiter Mughaho Awomi, honorary secretary NCA announced the results.
The function was compered by Sulivi Assumi while vote of thanks was proposed by NCA vice president Toikhu Awomi.
