Budget Spotlights Odisha’s Tourism Potential Under ‘Purvodaya’

Bhubaneswar: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s Union Budget 2024 presentation on Tuesday has placed a significant focus on Odisha’s tourism sector and the overall development of Eastern India. The budget highlights the central government’s commitment to transforming Odisha into a premier tourism destination while also introducing a comprehensive plan for the eastern region’s growth.

Chief Minister Mohan Majhi expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for prioritizing Odisha’s tourism sector development and made a post on X, “On behalf of the people of Odisha, I would like to thank the PM Shri Narendra Modi  and the Finance Minister Sitharaman ji for giving special importance to the development of Odisha’s tourism sector in the current budget and making arrangements to provide the necessary financial support.”

“The tourism sector including wildlife, marine resources and temple development will contribute significantly to Odisha’s economic development, making Odisha a centre of tourist attraction”, the CM further added.

During her budget speech, Sitharaman emphasized Odisha’s potential as an “ultimate tourism destination.” She highlighted the state’s diverse attractions such as Scenic beauty,  Temples and monuments, Wildlife sanctuaries and Pristine beaches. The Finance Minister announced that the Centre would provide assistance for the development of these tourism assets in Odisha. This move is expected to create jobs, stimulate investments, and unlock economic opportunities across various sectors in the state.

Sitharaman introduced ‘Purvodaya’, a comprehensive plan aimed at the all-round development of the eastern region of India. This initiative will cover five states Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh.

The Finance Minister noted that these eastern states are rich in natural resources and have strong cultural traditions. The ‘Purvodaya’ plan is designed to harness this potential and drive economic growth in the region.

The budget announces plans to develop corridors for the Vishnupath temple in Gaya and the Mahabodhi temple in Bodhgaya, following the successful model of the Kashi Vishwanath corridor. This initiative aims to transform these spiritually significant sites into world-class tourist destinations, said the Finance Minister.

Union Minister and Odisha BJP leader Jual Oram highlighted the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Janjatiya Unnat Gram Abhiyan, which will cover 63,000 villages and benefit around 5 crore tribal people. This program aims to improve the socio-economic conditions of tribal communities in tribal-majority villages and aspirational districts.

Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida thanked the central government for reinforcing Odisha’s strategic role in positioning India as a global tourist destination and made a series of posts on social media X.

Dy CM Parida also thanked the PM and Finance Minister for prioritising Odisha in the tourism sector and wrote, “Appreciation to Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @Narendramodi and Finance Minister Smt @nsitharaman for announcing special assistance for the development of tourism areas like temples, wildlife and beaches of Odisha. This will create various employment opportunities and help in building a developed Odisha”.

Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo praised the budget for meeting Odisha’s demands presented in the pre-budget meeting. He highlighted the potential for job creation in the tourism sector, which could reduce youth migration from the state. The DY CM expressed satisfaction stating that the state has received its “due share”.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan hailed the ‘Purvodaya’ plan, expressing confidence that eastern India, particularly Odisha, will become an epicentre of prosperity and a key driver of India’s future economic growth.
