Kolkata: In an unusual incident reported from Kolkata, the traffic police asked a car driver to pull out some stickers stuck on his car. The stickers which were put up on the car’s back glass were reportedly derogatory to women.

The stickers stuck on the car advised people to not trust women. They instead suggested that snakes were more trustworthy. The exact words used on the sticker was “Believe a snake not a girl.”

The Kolkata Police tweeted the photo of the car and the action taken by one of its traffic constables on its official ‘X’ handle. They said that a traffic constable noticed the car with the sticker on a road in Kolkata. He immediately stopped the car and asked the driver to remove the sticker. This was so because this sticker represented malice and misogyny hidden behind fun, said the police.

The police also said that such an openly provocative statement could count as defamation in the eyes of law and draw penalties. They said that such an act was punishable under Section 499 of the Indian Penal Code and 356 (i) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

The police said that they could have easily taken the legal route, but thought of first approaching the vehicle owner. When he was confronted about the stickers adorning his vehicles, the man did realise his mistake. He happily removed the sticker from his car. POlice had asked the man if he realised that he was demeaning women from his own family by displaying such a sticker on his car. The police then appealed to other vehicle owners to maintain Kolkata’s stellar reputation as India’s safest city for women.
