SRINAGAR: After South Kashmir’s Anantnag and Kulgam districts, cases of gastroenteritis have been reported in the Hari Parigam area of Awantipora in Pulwama district, where over 200 people have been infected in the last few days.

An official from the Health Department said that over 200 cases of gastroenteritis have been reported in Hariparigam village in the last few days, with people complaining of vomiting, loose motion, and cramps, leading to hospitalisation.

The official said that most patients are being treated in OPD while a few have been admitted to NTPHC Hari Parigam for treatment. He further added that the severity of the disease is decreasing, and most people are recovering.

“The situation is very much under control,” he said, adding that they are working on chlorination of water and have started a door-to-door survey.

Dr Paramjeet Singh, Sectoral Medical Officer Dadsara, told local news agency KNO that they have treated around 200 patients, with a few treated at SDH Tral. He said they are educating people on preventing the disease and urged adherence to SOPs issued by DHSK.

The SOPs include using boiled water for drinking and cooking, practising proper hand hygiene with soap and other disinfectants, and avoiding close contact with affected individuals. It is crucial to report symptoms to the nearest health facility immediately. Special attention should be given to children’s health, ensuring they wash their hands frequently.

Additionally, children, elderly individuals, and those with comorbidities should be kept away from affected individuals, and children’s health should be closely monitored for early detection of symptoms. Raw vegetables and salads should be avoided, and fruits should be properly washed before consumption. Street foods and junk foods should be avoided, and individuals should stay hydrated. It is also advised to avoid direct contact with sunlight during peak hours of the day. (KNO)
