‘EC does what suits BJP’: Mehbooba Mufti a day after poll results date revised in J&K, Haryana

The EC revised the polling date of Haryana for October 1 to October 5 on Saturday. As per the EC, the decision was taken to accommodate Bishnoi community’s tradition of celebrating Asoj Amavasya festival.

Srinagar: Just a day after the Election Commission (EC) changed the date for counting of results for Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) elections, PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Sunday said that the former does what is suitable for the BJP. The results of the elections will now be announced on October 8 along with for Haryana, instead of the previously announced October 4.

“They (ECI) do what suits the BJP. When I contested the (Lok Sabha) elections, they unnecessarily changed the date (of polling). Everything is done as per the wishes of the BJP and its proxy parties,” the news agency PTI quoted the former J&K chief minister as saying.

EC revises polling date in Haryana

On Saturday, the EC had also revised the polling date of Haryana for October 1 to October 5. As per the EC, the decision was taken to accommodate Bishnoi community’s tradition of celebrating Asoj Amavasya festival. The festival is celebrated honours Guru Jambheshwar.

This year, the festival falls on October 2. The people Bishnoi community, which is spread across Punjab, Rajasthan, and Haryana, visit Mukam village in Rajasthan for this annual festival. If gone with the previous date, the festival would have coincided with the date, resulting in many families not being able to vote.

Mufti expresses hope for free and fair elections

Speaking about the transfer of senior police officers during the upcoming elections in the Union Territory, the PDP chief said that with all officials being locals, she hoped that this would help in conducting the elections in a free, impartial, and fair manner.

“We all know what happened in 1987… The malpractices led to bloodshed which has not stopped to date. I hope that all the staff involved in the election process will play their role to ensure free and fair elections,” she added as per the agency.
