Manipur Government Prepares For Major Protest Rallies, Issues Precautionary Measures

Ahead of large-scale protest rallies planned by various Kuki-Zo groups today, the Manipur government has directed all relevant authorities to take precautionary measures to prevent any incidents. These rallies are expected to be some of the largest since widespread violence erupted in Manipur last year.

The state’s Home Department has issued an order calling for a robust response mechanism to be in place to maintain law and order. The order emphasises the seriousness with which the government views any actions that could disrupt the peace, particularly those that might encourage the closure of institutions or otherwise impact the current law and order situation.

“Any act of issuing public notice for organising a mass rally and urging shutdowns of institutions, which could have a significant impact on the prevailing law and order situation, is being taken very seriously by the State Government,” the order stated. It further appealed to the public, including public officials, to keep businesses, government offices, and private institutions open and functioning normally.

The order also warned that anyone found inciting or engaging in activities that could lead to disorder would face prosecution under the relevant laws.

The rallies in Kuki-Zo areas have been called by the Zomi Students’ Federation (ZSF) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO). These protests are in response to a purportedly leaked audio tape of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh, which has caused widespread outrage among the Kuki-Zo community.
