India is facing simultaneous infiltration attempts by China and Pakistan on the border. For this, the work of improving the infrastructure is going on at a war footing. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will complete specific infrastructure work on the border with China in the next few weeks. This includes a road patch on an alternative route to Leh which will prove helpful in ensuring connectivity in all weather conditions. Apart from this, the Union Defense Ministry has also given priority to other projects under the India-China Border Roads Program. Under this, connectivity has been established up to the Lipulekh Pass on the Mansarovar Yatra route in Uttarakhand. The Indian Express has given this information in one of its reports.

At present there are three routes to reach Leh. The first is via Srinagar-Zojila-Kargil in Jammu and Kashmir. The second is via Manali-Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh. This road diverges at a place called Darcha. From here one route connects to Leh via Padam and Nimu. The other connects to Leh via Karu via the mountain passes of Baralacha La in Himachal Pradesh and Tanglang La in Ladakh. At present both these routes to Leh do not have all-weather connectivity. Srinagar-Leh and Baralacha La-Karu-Leh are the old traditional routes to reach Leh.

Senior officials familiar with the projects said that connecting the 4 km long cut-off portion of the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road and starting the construction of the 4.1 km long twin tube Shinku La tunnel on the Manali-Darcha-Padam-Nimu axis are on the BRO’s immediate work list. The work of connecting the 4 km long cut-off portion of the Nimu-Padam-Darcha road is on the verge of completion and most of the road has already been tarred. The remaining work is expected to be completed in the next few weeks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the construction of the Shinkun La tunnel project during his visit to Drass in July. Officials said that full-fledged work on the tunnel is going to start in the next few weeks. During this time, the world’s highest tunnel will also be built at an altitude of 15800 feet.

This tunnel, built at a cost of Rs 1,681 crore, will reduce the distance between Manali and Leh by 60 km. It will ensure connectivity to the 4 km long cut-off section of the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road. It will be an alternative to the other two old routes to Leh and the third all-weather route.

According to officials, establishing connectivity to one of the roads running parallel to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh is also a major priority project of the BRO. Apart from the existing 255-km-long Durbuk-Shyok-Daulat Beg Oldie (DS-DBO) road, two other roads run parallel to the LAC at different locations. One road connects Leh and Demchok via Karu and Nyoma. The other road connects Durbuk to Nyoma via Chushul which lies south of the Pangong Tso lake.

An official said that priority has been given to establishing connectivity through the Leh-Demchok road in eastern Ladakh and most of the construction work on this road has been completed. There is a plan to eventually make these roads double lanes.

Let us tell you that the aim of all these projects is to develop a strong border structure in the Ladakh region and establish better connectivity to the LAC.
