Mumbai has ample drinking water reserves with lakes nearing full capacity; IMD predicts more rain

Mumbai’s seven key reservoirs have reached 96.54 per cent of their total capacity due to heavy rains, according to the BMC. The combined water stock now stands at 13.97 lakh million litres, with all reservoirs nearing full capacity.

Mumbai: The water levels in Mumbai’s seven crucial reservoirs, which supply drinking water to the entire city, have surged to 96.54 per cent of their total capacity, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). This significant increase comes as heavy rains continue to drench the region. The BMC’s latest data reveals that the collective water stock across the city’s lakes stands at an impressive 13.97 lakh million litres. The reservoirs—Tulsi, Tansa, Vihar, Bhatsa, Modak Sagar, Upper Vaitarna, and Middle Vaitarna—are all nearing full capacity.

Most lakes brimming at over 95% capacity

Specific lake levels have been reported as follows: Tansa is at 98.57 per cent, Modak Sagar is almost at its peak with 99.99 per cent, while Middle Vaitarna holds 98.15 per cent. Upper Vaitarna has reached 96.18 per cent, Bhatsa is at 95.03 per cent, and both Vihar and Tulsi are brimming at 100 per cent.

Several lakes over-flown due to heavy rains

The heavy rainfall has caused several of these lakes to overflow. Notably, Middle Vaitarna Lake began overflowing on July 4, followed by Vihar and Modak Sagar on July 25. Tansa Lake started overflowing on July 24, contributing to an increase in the water stock equivalent to 17 days’ worth of supply in just one day. Tansa Lake, which is located in Thane’s Shahpur region, contributes approximately 400 million gallons of water daily to Mumbai.

IMD predicts more rain in Mumbai

Tulsi Lake, one of the two lakes that supply water directly to the BMC, also began overflowing on July 20 at around 8:30 AM, echoing last year’s similar event that occurred on the same date. As for the weather, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall in Mumbai over the next 24 hours. The city is expected to experience a partly cloudy sky with occasional showers. Temperatures are likely to range between a maximum of 32 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 25 degrees Celsius.

Warning of two high tides today

Additionally, the BMC has warned of a high tide of about 4.01 meters expected to hit Mumbai at 10:48 AM today, followed by another high tide of 3.48 meters at 10:46 PM. A low tide of 1.69 meters is expected at 4:57 PM.
