New Delhi: Indian para sprinter Preethi Pal claimed bronze medal on Friday at the Stade de France in the ongoing Paris Paralympics. She finished third in women’s 100m T35 final with a personal best timing of 14.21s.

She finished third behind Chinese sprinters Zho Xia (13.58s) and Guo Qianqian (13.74s) who won gold and silver medals, respectively. The 23-year-old Preethi is the first Indian to account a medal from para-athletics in the 17th edition of the Summer Paralympics.

T35 classification is meant for athletes who have coordination impairments such as hypertonia, ataxia and athetosis, as well as cerebral palsy, as highlighted by news agency PTI.

Although the Uttar Pradesh-born athlete started her sprint on a slower note, she accelerated after the halfway mark to go past Iraq’s Fatimah Suwaed. However, she was nowhere near the two Chinese para sprinters, and hence settled for the bronze medal.
