Bengaluru: After two decades of dormancy, the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) is reigniting its ambitious plan to develop three self-sufficient townships on the city’s outskirts. The project, which has been on hold since 2006, will focus on areas in Bidadi, Solur near Magadi, and Nandagudi in Hoskote, as per a report published by Deccan Herald.

If sources are to be believed, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who oversees Bengaluru Development, is in charge of this revitalised initiative. Bidadi will be the first site to undergo development on a trial basis. Preliminary steps have been taken, including discussions with Namma Metro about extending services to these new townships. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is also involved, aiming to set up essential water infrastructure for the area.

BMRDA awaits approval for land acquisition, Detailed Project Report

The BMRDA is in the process of obtaining state approval for land acquisition and preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR). A social impact assessment will be conducted by the Bengaluru Urban district administration to gauge the potential effects of the development.

Plans with strategic accessibility

These locations were selected for their strategic connections to the Satellite Town Ring Road (STRR), enhancing their accessibility. Bidadi, with its advantageous location near four highways and potential for mixed-use development, is being prioritised. Nandagudi was chosen due to its position along the under-construction Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway, while Solur’s proximity to Nelamangala and Bengaluru adds to its appeal.

Revival plans backed by the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority

The revival of this project is supported by the recent formation of the Greater Bengaluru Development Authority (GBDA) under the Siddaramaiah-led government. The GBDA, akin to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), will oversee land acquisition and engineering efforts. Additionally, the BMRDA is in talks with financial institutions to secure funding for this significant development.
