Mizoram: Landslide damages under-construction Kawnpui Railway Station – Railways News
The under-construction Kawnpui Railway Station in Mizoram sustained partial damage due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall, according to an official from Northeast Frontier Railway. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported in the incident, which occurred on Wednesday, August 28.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Northeast Frontier Railway, confirmed the event, stating, “The under-construction Kawnpui Railway Station in Mizoram was partially damaged due to a landslide. There is no report of any casualty in the incident.”
Kawnpui is located in the Kolasib district of Mizoram and serves as a crucial link in the railway network connecting Mizoram to other northeastern states, reports news agency, ANI.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Mizoram throughout this week. The IMD’s press release stated, “Fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall is very likely over Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Odisha, with scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Arunachal Pradesh, West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand during the week.”
In related news, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Sumeet Singhal, recently authorized the operation of freight and passenger trains on the newly laid 16.725-kilometre broad-gauge line between Bhairabi and Hortoki, as of August 22. This section is part of the ongoing 51.38 km-long Bhairabi-Sairang new rail line project.
CPRO Sharma added, “CRS has approved operations of trains through the newly laid railway line at a maximum speed of 75 km/h after successful inspection and speed trials. This newly laid line will facilitate the movement of both freight and passenger traffic.”
The Bhairabi-Hortoki section includes 20 major bridges, 27 minor bridges, three Road Over Bridges (ROBs), and one Road Under Bridge (RUB), marking a significant development in the region’s railway infrastructure.
