The Transport Department and traffic police of Bihar have issued over 16,700 e-challans totaling Rs 9.49 crore within a week from August 7 to 15. These challans were issued across the state for violations of the Motor Vehicle Act, using an e-detection system installed at 13 toll plazas.

Officials reported that a total of 16,755 e-challans were issued. Of these, 9,676 were for vehicles from other states, while 7,079 were registered in Bihar.

Additional Director General (ADG) of Bihar Traffic Police, Sudhanshu Kumar, stated, “In coordination with the traffic police, the state transport department has implemented the e-challan system through an e-detection system installed at 13 toll plazas. Vehicle owners without valid insurance, fitness, and pollution certificates will now receive e-challans on their mobile phones through this system.”

Initiatives to reduce road accidents in Bihar

He added that the e-detection system automatically issues e-challans when required documents are missing. One of the most fatal road accidents in the state occurs on National Highways.

To reduce accidents, vehicles must have up-to-date fitness permits, insurance, and motor vehicle tax. The introduction of the e-detection system aims to help drivers comply with the MV Act and decrease road accidents.

Additionally, the Bihar government has recently approved 10,332 new positions, including 4,215 for highway patrolling, to enhance traffic rule enforcement in the state.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar recently launched the ‘national highway patrolling system’. The initiative deploys the patrolling vehicles at strategic locations every 50 km, which is crucial to preventing accidents and saving lives.
