DIMAPUR, AUGUST 28 (MExN): The University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM) celebrated its Tenth Convocation today, marking a significant milestone in the institution’s history. The event saw the conferment of 1,639 degrees, including 17 Ph.D. degrees, 906 postgraduate degrees, and 716 undergraduate degrees.
A highlight of the ceremony was the awarding of Honorary Doctor of Letters (D. Litt.) degrees to Zubeen Garg, a celebrated cultural icon from Assam, and Lou Majaw, a renowned musician from Meghalaya. The honorary degrees were in recognition of their remarkable contributions to art, culture, and their efforts in promoting peace, harmony, and societal development.
The event, presided over by USTM Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, was attended by a host of distinguished guests, including Vice Chancellors, academicians, and other eminent personalities. Although the Governor of Meghalaya, C.H. Vijayashankar, who serves as the Visitor of USTM, could not attend the ceremony due to unforeseen circumstances, he extended his congratulations to the university, the honorary degree recipients, and the graduating students.
Prof. Ved Prakash, former Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), delivered the convocation address, inspiring graduates to contribute positively to society. A special address was also given by Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai, Vice Chancellor of Somaiya Vidyasagar University, Mumbai, who emphasized the importance of education in nation-building.
In their acceptance speeches, both Zubeen Garg and Lou Majaw expressed their heartfelt gratitude for the recognition, underscoring their commitment to continuing their work in the fields of art and culture.
Other dignitaries present at the event included Prof. Neelima Gupta, VC of Dr. Harisingh Gour University; Prof. Mohammad Afshar Alam, VC of Jamia Hamdard; Prof. Ami U. Upadhyay, VC of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University, Ahmedabad; Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, VC of Mizoram University; Prof. Sat Prakash Bansal, VC of Central University of Himachal Pradesh; Prof. Ganga Prasad Prasain, VC of Tripura University; Prof. Saket Kushwaha, VC of Rajiv Gandhi University; Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, VC of NEHU, Shillong; and Dr. R.M. Pant, VC of Assam University, Silchar.
Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque, in his welcome address, reiterated USTM’s vision of becoming a world-class institution and called upon stakeholders to contribute to the university’s growth and the broader nation-building process. He also expressed his gratitude to the Government of Meghalaya for its support in establishing USTM.
The Convocation featured the presentation of the University report by USTM Vice Chancellor Prof. G. D. Sharma, followed by the awarding of degrees and gold medals. Notable awards included the Visitor’s Best Student Award to Kasim Ampang Sangma (MA Rural Development), the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Best PG Student Award to Manash Pratim Sarmah (M.Sc. Zoology), the Chancellor’s Best Student Award to Mustafizur Rahman (B.Sc. Chemistry), and the PA Sangma Best UG Student Award to Sujata Kumari (B. Pharm). Additionally, 45 gold medals were awarded to the top students in various departments.
