Nalin Prabhat appointed new DGP of Jammu and Kashmir – Elets eGov

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has appointed Nalin Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer, as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Jammu and Kashmir, effective October 1. Until then, Prabhat will serve as the Special Director-General (DG) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Amid rising terror attacks in the Jammu region since June 9, which have resulted in casualties among security forces, the Centre has moved swiftly to appoint Prabhat, 56, as the new DGP, according to media reports.

In an order issued Thursday, the Centre stated, “Consequent upon joining the AGMUT cadre on inter-cadre deputation from AP cadre, Prabhat is hereby posted as Special DG, J&K Police with immediate effect and till September 30. Further, upon the retirement of R R Swain, IPS of 1991-batch of AGMUT-cadre on September 30, Prabhat is appointed as DGP, J&K Police from October 1, and until further orders…”

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved Prabhat’s inter-cadre deputation from Andhra Pradesh to the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre for three years. This decision came just three months after Prabhat was appointed as the DG of the National Security Guard (NSG). The ACC previously sanctioned his appointment as NSG DG until August 31, 2028.

Before joining the NSG, Prabhat held the position of additional director general and Special DG of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), leading its operations in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also served as the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kashmir and South Kashmir sectors. An alumnus of St Stephen’s College, he holds a BA (Hons) and MA degree.

A recipient of three police gallantry medals, Prabhat has also headed the specialised anti-Naxal police force ‘Greyhounds’ in Andhra Pradesh, his former cadre state.

In response to the uptick in terror attacks in the Union Territory, Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired multiple meetings with senior officials, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and officers from the Indian Army and CRPF, to devise new security strategies.
