New Delhi: A shocking case of child sexual abuse and exploitation has shaken a village in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, as a 37-year-old grocery store owner reportedly stands accused of sexually assaulting dozens of children and young adults, filming the acts and using the footage to extort money from his victims, police said on Tuesday.

The accused, who has been identified but is currently missing, targeted children who came to his shop, offering them spiked drinks and then abusing them while recording the horrifying acts. He later used the videos to blackmail his victims, threatening to release them publicly unless they paid him. “We came to know about what had happened only when the police came to our home. My son had borrowed for ₹ 3,000 a few days ago without telling us the reason. Now I know that he gave the money to that man,” a victim’s mother was quoted by NDTV.

Families of the victims, many of whom are minors, have spoken of the profound trauma their children are enduring, with some refusing to eat or drink, withdrawing from social interaction, or even running away from home. The victims, often too ashamed to speak out, only revealed the abuse after a video of the man assaulting one of them went viral on social media. “One day I had gone to buy something from his shops. He offered me a cold drink. I fainted after drinking it. After I woke up, I was in pain. I told my mother about the pain after a few days. He was demanding money from me,” NDTV quoted one of the victims.

Police have confirmed that the abuse was likely ongoing for a considerable period, with villagers only becoming aware of the extent of the perpetrator’s crimes recently. An FIR has been filed, charging the accused with unnatural sex, criminal intimidation, and violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The authorities are actively searching for the accused, but his current whereabouts remain unknown. The Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation has stepped in to offer legal support and fight for justice for the victims.
