Assam: NIT Silchar’s Bangladeshi student deported for ‘liking’ anti-India social media post
Guwahati, Aug 26: A student from Bangladesh studying at National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Silchar, Assam, was sent back home on Monday for allegedly “liking” an anti-India social media post.
The student had liked anti-India post on Facebook by Sadat Hossain Alphi, a former student of NIT Sichar who also hails from Bangladesh and now resides there.
Following complaints, the student was “sent home” to Bangladesh through the India-Bangladesh international border in Karimganj on Monday morning around 11am. Authorities provided the student adequate security during the crossover.

NIT Silchar authorities, however, claimed the student herself expressed desire to go back home for a while and she applied for leave on Sunday. She had joined NIT Silchar in 2021.
The anti-India post by Sadat Hossain Alphi’s account had first been brought to notice of the authorities by Subhashish Choudhary, a former student of Assam University Silchar, on August 22. As evidence, he shared some screenshots of Alphi’s social media posts. After that there were several complaints lodged against Alphi in Silchar and other parts of Assam.

However, Alphi has denied posting these anti-India posts, claiming that his Facebook account has been hacked. Upon learning that anti-India content had been posted from his account, he said he has recovered his account and deleted the post.
There are around 70 students from Bangladesh studying in various disciplines of NIT, Silchar. Reportedly, there is an anti-India wave spreading across Bangladesh after the students’ unrest and there are several social media posts against India originating from Bangladesh.
