A businessman in Mumbai was cheated of Rs 33.3 lakh by a woman whom he met on a dating app. The 53-year-old resident of Ghansoli said that he met the woman a few times after befriending her on a dating app. During these meetings, she often asked him for money. In this manner, he ended up paying her more than Rs 30 lakh.

Thane: In a case reported from Navi Mumbai, a businessman lost more than Rs 33 lakh to a fraudster. Police said that the person who cheated on him was a woman he met on an online dating app. Police said that the businessman was in his 50s.

Case registered at Cyber police station, no arrests yet

The 53-year-old man has registered a case of cheating in the matter at the Cyber crime police station. Police said that the businessman from Ghansoli, who has not been named, filed a case under sections 319(2) (cheating by personation) and 318(4) (cheating) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita and Information Technology Act. The case was registered on Friday.

According to the business, he met the woman, who identified herself as Pragati Dahiya on a dating app.The 2 exchanged WhatsApp numbers and started chatting. The communication between the 2 continued from March to July 2024. During these 5 months the 2 also met each other a few times. During these meetings the woman coerced him into paying Rs 33.3 lakh.

The businessman was initially told that he would get his money back, but that never happened, police said. It was then that he decided to take the legal route and approached the police. Soon after the official complaint was registered, the police launched a probe in the matter. So far however the investigators have found little success and said that they are still probing the matter. They hope to catch the culprit soon.
